Court Reporters are highly trained individuals who must study at an accredited college/university, a court reporting education is very in depth and covers numerous things.
On a typical court reporting school course you will learn about stenographer machinery (court reporting machinery), specialized softwares for transcribing and be fully capable of understand medical and legal jargon. Once you have studied and received your accreditation then you will be able to find work as a court reporter, typically you would join an existing firm or practice.
A Court Reporter can usually make anywhere between $60,000 USD and $100,000 USD per year on their own, depending on the economy and workflow. More often than not starting your own practice can be very rewarding and is something most stenographers will work towards in their careers.
